I remember being 5 years old and really, really wanting to help with the Passover cleaning in a meaningful way. You see I am the youngest of 3 children by a 6 years and I always felt I was the afterthought. SO I beg my mother to let me clean out the bottom of the silver cabinet. She has the 4 beautiful silver candy dishes with glass inserts. I carefully take them out of the cabinet, dust each one off, then just as carefully try to put them back, when one of the glass pieces slips out of my hands and breaks. I am devastated, I run up to my room and go hide in the corner. I think that's when I decided I needed to be careful about asking, because even if you get what you want you could get into trouble. Now my mother was wonderful about it, but everytime I looked into the silver cabinet it was the first thing I saw, even hidden way in back.
I think that is the hardest thing for me. To ask for help, to admit I don't know how, or I can't do it on my own. To open myself up and make myself vulnerable. To admit not just to myself but to other people, that I am less than how I think I ought to be. To let people know that I'm scared and maybe don't know how to express what I need. But I'm the Coach! Shouldn't I have all, or at least most of the answers?
Apparently not. Tonight I took the advice of someone I didn't even know, part of a group of women entrepreneurs, who simply put out the proposition "how would describe what you do in a creative manner?" and I got stuck rambling off incoherently. Then she said the thing I feared most. DON'T DO IT ALONE. ASK.
So I did, and people responded and I am not any less of who I was before, I am more. More calm, more clear, more directed the only thing that is less, is my fear of what people will thing of me. I still am unsure, but I am not alone.
It's kind of neat, actually.
Most of us, myself included, even though I supposedly know better, go through life thinking we need to HAVE something in order to DO something in order to BE something.
Smarter and more emotionally evolved people than me, have said to flip it, and if you Be the type of person who has what you want, then you will DO the necessary actions to make it happen and you will HAVE whatever it is you are seeking be wealth, happiness, relationship ..

It sounds wonderful in theory, but how does it really work for us ordinary folk?
What do I need to do, who do I need to be and for how long to get to where I want to go.
I think a big part of it is letting go of our stories of how things should ( there's that ugly word again) look and perhaps go back in to a time when we looked at life as an adventure, when we couldn't wait to get up in the morning to see what was going to happen, when life was new and exciting, when everything was a learning experience.
Imagine living life like a 2 year old, with endless energy and taking happiness from the simplest things.

EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. and he loved it eveytime! The joy he took in that movie was something I can't even imagine today.
Bur what if I could,

TO INFINITY AND BEYOND!
When you meditate, you are supposed to focus on your breathing, right? Well, you need to be breathing in order to focus on it (duh) . The realization I came to, okay, my chiropractor the amazing Dr. Mark Filippi, has been telling me for years that I don't breath, is that I really, really don't breath like a normal person. I need to make a conscious effort to breath. How weird is that? I have even come up with a theory as to why I don't...you see, I'm a dentist who doesn't wear a mask, now I don't want to breathe in all the stuff that comes flying out of peoples mouths when I am drilling and I certainly don't want to smell it, so I developed the habit of not breathing when I am actually drilling. (It goes to show how little time dentists are actually drilling in your mouth, because it it was a long time, I would have been passing out regularly)
Normal people (of which I apparently am not one) experience changes in breathing patterns when they are stresses or angry. So, that is why meditation with it's focus on breathing helps calm people down and helps them focus inwards.
Since I started on my journey into mediation, I have noticed that when I don't take those 5 minutes to focus in on my breathing, my whole body tenses up and I find it difficult to do even the thing I love the most, which is dancing. Last night, I went to my weekly belly dancing class (tons of fun, I highly recommend it) and it took almost half the class to relax my shoulders! But I generally am tense through the shoulders, so why was this time so different? Because I actually noticed that my shoulders where tense, and was able to distinguish why.
That was something new.
The simple practice of daily meditation, gives me better awareness as to the why, and gives me the tools to overcome it.
And it all starts with breathing, who would have thought.
Breathing calms you down and you get to take back control over your environment.
It's not small wonder that powerful, successful people meditate.
And now I do, to.
So this is my official post of the day, as opposed to the previous one which I started yesterday, but posted today, so I'm counting it as yesterday's post to keep my promise / ;-)
Trust the experts. That's hard for me to say.
Because, I know better, right? I know what works on my skin, for my coloring, heck I've been doing my own makeup since I was 15 and, well, that's a lot of years ago.
So I go to Il Makiage today to finally use my prepaid balance and of course this young woman, okay she was the manager, but I could be her mother, in some cultures probably even her grandmother, wants to do my makeup....and I learned something by keeping my mouth shut and letting her do her thing. I learned that I actually had a clue of what I'm doing (nice) I learnt what I was doing wrong :-(. But what I really learned was to keep my mouth shut, unless it was to ask a question, to listen to what she was doing and the why as she explained.
Lesson learned. Better late than never, as the ubiquitous "they" say. Who are they, anyway? A question for another time.
So today's takeaway. Listen before you decide something is not right. You can learn from anyone of any age at any age. Oh, and makeup is fun!
